Loch Ness holds more water than all the lakes in England and Wales combined, and perhaps a monster or two beneath its dark surface. Our small-group tours from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Aberdeen take you to Scotland's most famous loch, where legends meet breathtaking Highland scenery and every ripple on the water might just be Nessie saying hello.

Why Visit Loch Ness?

Visiting Loch Ness is a must-do for Scottish lore. The Loch Ness offers impressive views stretching 23 miles long, plunging over 750 feet deep, and contains more freshwater than all the other lakes in England and Wales combined. Peat from the surrounding hills stains the water a mysterious dark brown, creating visibility of just a few feet below the surface. What lurks in those depths? Scientists say eels and trout. Legend says something far more interesting: the famous Loch Ness monster.

But Loch Ness offers far more than just monster hunting as it sits within the Great Glen, a geological fault line that slices Scotland in two. Mountains rise steeply from the water's edge. Ruined castles perch on rocky promontories. And the Highland scenery surrounding this famous stretch of water rivals anything Scotland has to offer.

What's the Story behind the Loch Ness Monster?

Is Nessie a surviving plesiosaur from the age of dinosaurs? A giant eel? An optical illusion caused by boat wakes and logs? Or simply a brilliant story that refuses to die?

The first recorded sighting dates back to 565 AD, when Saint Columba allegedly encountered a "water beast" in the River Ness. However, Nessie fever really caught fire in 1933, after a road was built along the loch's northern shore, providing clearer views of the water. Sightings multiplied. Photographs emerged (some of which were later proven to be fake). Theories flourished. Scientists have even scanned the loch with sonar and submarines. They've collected DNA samples from the water. Yet the mystery persists.

Your driver-guide knows the legends, the hoaxes, and the genuine unexplained sightings. They'll share Nessie stories as you travel, and who knows? You might spot something breaking the surface that makes you wonder. For the full story, read our blog on the Loch Ness Monster: Fact or Fiction.

Can I Take a Boat Cruise on Loch Ness?

Yes! Our Complete Loch Ness Experience from Inverness includes a boat trip as standard, while other Loch Ness tours offer it as an optional extra. From the boat, you'll see Urquhart Castle rising from its rocky perch, mountains reflected in the water, and the sheer scale of the loch becomes apparent.

The cruises typically last 50 minutes to an hour, with commentary about the loch's history, geology and monster sightings. Keep your camera ready and your eyes on the water. While we can't promise you'll spot Nessie, you'll definitely capture some stunning Highland scenery. Plus, you can join the ranks of those who've searched for the monster from the loch itself.
