The UK's Best Places to Visit in Autumn

The UK's Best Places to Visit in Autumn: From Scotland to Brighton

Key takeaways:

York is the UK's ultimate autumn escape, topping the table with 106 out of 120, thanks to 20 parks, 170 nearby trails and some of the driest autumn weather in the country. London places second despite its warmer 15.6°C days, carried by an unmatched 241 parks and 328 walking trails. Edinburgh, Manchester and Bath round out the top five, each sitting close to the ideal 13°C and backing it up with parks and trails within easy reach.

A UK Autumn Escape

Autumn breaks in the UK might be the most underrated kind of escape going. The crowds thin out, the leaves turn every shade of copper, and the low light does something lovely to old stone and open parkland. Scotland in autumn is particularly special, with Highland glens turning gold and cities like Edinburgh taking on an atmosphere that summer never quite manages. To crown the UK's ultimate autumn escape, we analysed 30 destinations across the things that actually matter for a seasonal stroll: how much green space they have, how many walking trails are nearby, how close the days stay to that ideal crisp temperature, and how often you'll get rained on. These 10 came out on top.

1. York

York tops the list, and it isn't hard to see why. Twenty parks, 170 walking trails on its doorstep, and some of the driest autumn weather in the country. The Museum Gardens turn gold, and the medieval walls make a grand circular walk in their own right, with the Minster looming over the rooftops as the leaves come down. For a crisp autumn escape, nothing else on this list beats it. Reach it in fine style on our York, the Dales, Lake District and Hadrian's Wall five-day tour from Edinburgh, which winds through Bamburgh Castle, the harbour town of Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, the Yorkshire Dales and Lake Windermere before it's done. Five days, one very full memory card.

2. London

London comes second, and while it can't compete on peace and quiet, it wins on sheer scale. With 241 parks and a frankly ridiculous 328 walking trails, it puts more green within reach than anywhere else here. Hampstead Heath in full autumn colour. Richmond Park, where the deer roam under turning trees. The Thames Path at low tide. You could walk somewhere new every autumn weekend for years. When the city gets too much, our day tours from London head out to the Cotswolds, Oxford, Cambridge and Stonehenge, so you can swap pavement for open countryside and still be back for dinner.

3. Edinburgh in autumn

In third place is Edinburgh, the coolest city on the list, and we mean that in degrees. Autumn days in Edinburgh hover around 12°C, which is just about spot on for a brisk walk without breaking a sweat. Scotland in autumn does something particular to a city like this, its volcanic skyline, medieval Old Town, and sandstone tenements all taking on a drama that summer never quite captures. The walking is superb, with Arthur's Seat, the Water of Leith and the Pentland Hills all a short stroll from the centre. It's also our home city, where Robin started the whole thing back in 1993. From here, our tours from Edinburgh run north to Loch Ness, Glencoe, the Isle of Skye and out to the Outer Hebrides, well past the usual Highland postcards. First time in the city? Our Edinburgh travel guide is a good place to start.

4. Manchester

Manchester ties Edinburgh on points and quietly makes its case. It has 191 trails, 21 parks, and yes, the most rainy days of anyone here. Pack a waterproof and it's a genuinely great walking base, from the fringes of the Peak District, at their moody autumn best, to the canals threading through the city, their towpaths thick with fallen leaves. It's a Rabbie's departure point too. Our four-day tour from Manchester to Scotland runs up through the Lake District, Loch Lomond, Glencoe and Loch Ness before finishing in Edinburgh.

5. Bath

Rounding out the top five, Bath is walking made elegant, and it wears autumn beautifully. Honey-coloured Georgian crescents glow under the low October sun, the Bath Skyline trail circles the city through beech woods that turn copper and gold, and the Kennet and Avon Canal offers a gentler walk along leaf-strewn towpaths. Thirteen parks might sound modest, but this is a compact place where the countryside begins almost the moment the terraces end. Our tours from Bath take you out to the Cotswold villages and the standing stones of Stonehenge, two of England's much-loved sights rolled into one memorable day out.

6. Oxford

Oxford claims sixth place and keeps things green and gentle. Autumn in the UK suits a city like this particularly well, its honey-coloured spires and leafy college gardens looking their best under October light. The historic architecture of Christ Church, which Harry Potter fans may recognise, and its leafy meadow make an ideal backdrop for a relaxed autumn wander. Our Oxford and Cotswold villages day tour from London pairs the university city with Bibury and Burford, arguably the prettiest villages in England. We'll let you be the judge.

7. Liverpool

We head north for 7th place. Liverpool has more parks than you might expect (31, the second-highest count on the list), even if its trail count is on the leaner side. Sefton Park looks especially lovely under autumn leaves, while the waterfront makes for a scenic city walk, with views across the Mersey and a crisp bite in the autumn air.

8. Bristol

Landing in eighth position, Bristol rewards the curious walker. The Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge give you the drama, Leigh Woods offers a grounding stroll, and the harbourside gives you the coffee, with plenty of green spaces taking on golden autumn colours by late October. Our tours from Bristol head south to Stonehenge, Devon and the wild Cornish coast, so a city walk one day can turn into a clifftop one the next.

9. Cambridge

Cambridge lands ninth spot, and this small, flat city is made for wandering. A stroll along the River Cam is one of the loveliest short walks in England, especially with autumn mist sitting on the water and the willows going gold along the bank. The trail count is modest (61), but quality beats quantity here. Our Cambridge, Saffron Walden and Medieval England day tour from London adds the picturesque Thaxted and the proper old market town of Saffron Walden to the day.

10. Brighton

Brighton rounds out the list, thanks to its extensive network of walking trails and minimal days of autumn rain. The city is an easy train ride from London, where our day trips from London open up the whole south of England.

Wherever you fancy exploring this autumn, there's a good chance a Rabbie's tour can carry you somewhere even wilder nearby. Have a look through all our UK tours to see where you could end up.

Is autumn a good time to visit Scotland?

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Scotland. The summer crowds have thinned, the glens turn gold and red, and the light on the hills in October is some of the finest in the country. Temperatures sit around 10-12°C, which is ideal for walking without the midges that make summer uncomfortable in the Highlands. Edinburgh in autumn is particularly rewarding, with the city at its atmospheric best and accommodation easier to find than during festival season. Our tours from Edinburgh run throughout autumn, covering Loch Ness, Glencoe, the Isle of Skye and beyond. The best autumn leaves in Scotland tend to peak between mid-October and early November, depending on the year and how far north you travel.

How we ranked them

We analysed 30 UK destinations to find the best places to visit in autumn, using data from Tripadvisor, AllTrails, World Weather Online and WeatherSpark. Each place was ranked across four factors: average autumn temperature, average number of rainy days in autumn, number of parks, and number of walking trails up to 20 km long.

We treated average temperatures between 12°C and 14°C as optimal autumn weather, with 13°C the sweet spot. The closer a destination sat to that ideal, the higher it scored, and scores dropped away the further the temperature drifted from it. Fewer rainy days scored better too, which is how we found the spots offering the best conditions for a comfortable stroll on a crisp autumn afternoon.

Each destination's autumn temperature was first given an initial score based on how close it sat to the 13°C ideal, and that initial score was then scaled to a score out of 30. We also scored the other three metrics out of 30 (one point for every destination in the study), before combining all four into an overall score out of 120 to reveal the UK's ultimate autumn escape.
