Journey to Falkland
Leave Edinburgh behind and follow the trail of Outlander's most iconic filming locations and pivotal moments. This unforgettable journey not only lets you relive some of the series' most memorable scenes, but also offers the opportunity to uncover the fascinating real-life history still echoing in the castles, villages, and landmarks featured in the show.
Falkland & journey through the Highlands
Your first visit of the day is to Falkland. This charming village will steal your heart with its cobblestone streets, quaint stone houses, and a Renaissance palace. Outlander fans relive the show’s opening scenes here, because Falkland represents 1940s Inverness. Keep an eye out for familiar sights like Mrs Baird’s Guesthouse and the Bruce Fountain.
Next, travel north through the forest-clad landscapes of Perthshire to Killiecrankie. Today, this river gorge is a place of serenity, but it once was the stage of the Battle of Killiecrankie – a Jacobite battle which was one of the goriest in Scottish history.
Highland Folk Museum & journey through the Highlands
The journey takes you further north into the Highlands, reaching the Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore, within the spectacular Cairngorms National Park.
The museum features replicas of 18th-century turf-roofed Highland crofts and gives you a glimpse into traditional Highland life. You’ll remember this place as one of the MacKenzie clan villages where Claire and the MacKenzie party stop to collect the rent.
Leaving rural Highland life behind, continue the journey through the national park, stopping for photos and to admire heather-covered moorlands and the rounded granite summits of some of the highest peaks in the United Kingdom.
Clava Cairns & free evening in Inverness
Your final stop of the day is the mysterious site of Clava Cairns. This well-preserved complex of ring cairns and standing stones is as ancient as it is beautiful. And it’s also said to be the inspiration for the standing stones of Craigh na Dun in Outlander.
From there, it’s just a short drive to Inverness, often referred to as the Capital of the Highlands. The evening is free for you to enjoy - make sure to sample some local cuisine and take a leisurely stroll along the charming streets to the impressive Inverness Castle or the scenic River Ness islands.
