What makes Scotland's lochs special?
There are around 31,000 lochs in Scotland, covering roughly 1% of the country's land area. Some are famous enough to have their own gift shops. Others are known only to locals, the occasional hill walker who stumbles across them on a clear afternoon, and our expert driver-guides.
The word loch comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning "lake" or "sea inlet," and was used for centuries before English spread through the Highlands. Freshwater lochs formed when glaciers carved deep valleys during the last ice age, leaving steep-sided basins that filled with meltwater. Sea lochs are saltwater inlets cut into the coastline by the same glacial action but filled by the ocean rather than rivers. Both share that quality of scale and darkness that makes them feel unlike anywhere else on earth. It's the reason people cross the Atlantic to see them. And once they do, most of them come back.
Which lochs do Scotland loch tours visit?
The famous three are Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, and Loch Katrine, and all three feature across our tour range. Loch Ness stretches 23 miles through the Great Glen, reaches depths of 230 meters, and holds more freshwater than all the lakes in England and Wales combined. The ruins of Urquhart Castle sit on the lochside, an optional boat cruise gives you a sense of its scale from the water, and Nessie sightings are not guaranteed, but the scenery more than compensates.
Loch Lomond is Scotland's largest loch by surface area, with over 30 islands scattered across the water and mountains marking the point where the Lowlands meet the Highlands. It was Rob Roy MacGregor's homeland, and one of the most varied stretches of water in the country. Loch Katrine sits in the heart of the Trossachs, inspired Sir Walter Scott's poem The Lady of the Lake, and offers a traffic-free lochside road that cyclists have largely kept to themselves. A vintage steamship has been sailing the water since 1900 and is still running.
Beyond the famous three, our tours take in lochs that most visitors never reach. Loch Awe, Scotland's longest loch, with the ruins of Kilchurn Castle reflected in the water at its northern end. Loch Maree in Wester Ross, fringed by ancient Caledonian pines, while remaining genuinely remote, despite being accessible by road. And dozens of smaller Highland lochs tucked between mountains, down the kind of narrow roads that only a 16-seat mini-coach can navigate without the driver breaking a sweat.
Can you take a boat cruise on Scotland's lochs?
You can, and it's worth doing if you get the chance. Seeing a loch from the water gives you a completely different sense of its scale. Mountains that looked close from the shore turn out to be miles away. The surface can be glass-smooth or choppy within the same hour, which says everything about Scottish weather. Most cruises run from April to October, and your driver-guide knows exactly what's available at each loch and how to make the most of the time you have there.
What wildlife can you see around Scotland's lochs?
Quite a lot, if you know where to look and when. Ospreys returned to Scotland in the 1950s after their extinction in 1916, and over 300 pairs now nest here, many around Highland lochs where they fish for brown trout and pike. Golden eagles soar above the surrounding mountains. Red deer come down to the water at dawn and dusk, and in October the stags roar across the hills during the rut in a sound that's simultaneously impressive and vaguely prehistoric. Red squirrels dart through the pine forests. Otters hunt the loch margins in the early morning.
Your driver-guide keeps an eye out throughout the journey and knows the spots most likely to reward a careful look.

Which is better, Loch Ness or Loch Lomond?
It depends on what you're after, and both have their advocates. Loch Ness wins on legend and drama. The water is so dark and deep that it genuinely feels like anything could be down there, and the Great Glen setting gives the whole experience a scale that's hard to prepare for. Loch Lomond wins on variety, with over 30 islands, landscapes that shift from gentle and wooded in the south to wild and mountainous in the north, and a connection to Rob Roy MacGregor that gives the place a different kind of story.
If you're choosing based on monster-hunting prospects, Loch Ness has the edge. For sheer variety of things to see and do, Loch Lomond leads. Or skip the choice entirely. Several of our tours visit both in a single day, and the contrast between them is part of what makes Scotland's lochs so worth exploring.
Where do loch tours in Scotland depart from?
Our loch tours depart from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, Aviemore, and Manchester. Edinburgh offers the broadest range of options, with tours visiting multiple lochs across both day and multi-day itineraries. Glasgow sits just 30 miles from Loch Lomond and also sends tours north into the wider Highlands. Inverness sits right beside Loch Ness, making it the natural base for anyone focused on the Great Glen. Aviemore puts you in the heart of the Cairngorms, within easy reach of some of Scotland's lesser-known lochs. Aberdeen and Manchester both offer longer touring options that take in the full sweep of the country.

How long do Scottish loch tours take?
How long you spend on a Scottish loch tour depends entirely on how much of the country you want to see. A half-day gives you one loch, a short walk, and views that stay with you long after you've left. A full day opens up one or two major lochs alongside castles, Highland villages, or Glencoe. Go for longer, and the islands come into reach, along with whisky distilleries, the North Coast 500, and corners of Scotland that most visitors never find. Our range covers everything from a single day to 17 days on the road, and your driver-guide will make sure every hour of it counts.
Why tour Scotland's lochs with Rabbie's?
With a maximum of 16 passengers, we travel in mini-coaches that can navigate the narrow lochside roads that larger buses simply can't access, pull over when red deer appear on the hillside, and stop at viewpoints that don't make it onto the big coach itineraries. Our driver-guides know where ospreys nest, which hillsides hold deer at dusk, and the stories behind every loch you pass. They bring the legends to life in a way no audio guide ever quite manages.
Scotland's lochs have been here for 10,000 years, and we'd like them to stay that way. By keeping group sizes small, supporting local businesses along the route, and contributing to environmental and community projects, we do what we can to protect the places that make these tours worth taking.
