On the road of the NC500

Morning

Journey through the North Highlands to Loch Carron

Set off from Inverness and embark on Scotland's ‘Route 66,' a journey through some of the country's most breathtaking landscapes. With so much to explore, we'll start our day early, traveling through gently rolling farmlands before transitioning into the dramatic terrain of the northern Highlands and Loch Carron. As the scenery becomes more remote and rugged, with vast moorlands, heather-clad hills, and streams meandering through the untamed wilderness, you'll find yourself captivated by the unspoiled beauty of the Highlands—a place where time seems to stand still and nature reigns.

Mid Morning

Bealach na Bà and Applecross

Next, prepare for the thrilling drive along Bealach na Bà, one of Scotland's highest and most dramatic roads, once used to move cattle between the Applecross Peninsula and markets across the country. This exhilarating route takes us to the remote village of Applecross, which still retains the charm of traditional Highland life, with some residents speaking Gaelic. Get some refreshments at the popular Applecross Inn, before we continue with our adventure.

Afternoon

Shieldaig for lunch, Beinn Eighe Reserve, and Corrieshalloch Gorge

Next, we journey to the charming village of Shieldaig, framed by rugged mountains and a striking sea loch. We'll stop here for lunch—be sure to sample some local seafood before exploring this picturesque place. Afterwards, we pass through the Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve, where mountains rise above dark lochs and pristine forests. The North Coast 500 isn't just about rugged terrain; it's also known for stunning beaches. We'll visit one of its hidden gems—Gairloch Beach—where you can reconnect with nature. Lastly, we visit Corrieshalloch Gorge, where a short walk through the forest leads to the dramatic cascade of the gorge, offering a breathtaking view of nature's power.

Early Evening

Free evening in Ullapool

We conclude the day with a scenic drive back to Ullapool, passing through untouched moorlands and peat bogs en route to the shores of Loch Broom. Enjoy a well-deserved rest among the charming, whitewashed cottages of this delightful fishing village. Or stay up for some stargazing and catching a session of live music in one of the many local pubs.

Journey to Assynt

It's time to get ready for another exciting day of adventure along the North Coast 500. We leave Ullapool and head into the far northwest Highlands, where the wilderness of the Assynt mountains awaits.

Mid Morning

Ardvreck Castle, Durness

We then step into history with a visit to the 15th-century Ardvreck Castle, perched on the shores of Loch Assynt. Once the stronghold of the MacLeods of Assynt, this haunting ruin is steeped in legendary tales of betrayal and the capture of the Marquis of Montrose, offering a glimpse into Scotland's turbulent past. Next, we turn to the marvel of modern engineering with a scenic drive over the striking Kylesku Bridge that blends effortlessly into the rugged landscape, before we continue north to Durness.

Afternoon

Exploring parts of North Coast 500

It's time for some fresh sea air so we head to Balnakeil Beach. You can go for a walk along its vast sandy beach and feel the cool breeze from the Atlantic on your face, or you can just relax and take in the beauty of the rolling dunes and the sound of the waves. Then we continue to see another natural marvel, Smoo Cave. Steeped in legends, stories of pirates and mystery, this awe-inspiring sea cave is one of our favourite places along the NC500. The rest of the afternoon is flexible and it depends on the weather and your group's interests. We will stop for lunch in a Highland village and travel along more of the stunning landscapes before we arrive in Thurso.

Early Evening

Free evening in Thurso

You have a free evening to enjoy this wee town at your own pace. Will you take a peaceful stroll along its beautiful beach, or explore the streets to find a cosy restaurant for a relaxing dinner? Mid Morning

John O'Groats

Next, we journey to John O'Groats, the northernmost village on mainland Scotland and a symbolic landmark for epic adventures, including the iconic Land's End to John O'Groats route. Take a moment to grab a coffee and snap a photo with the famous signpost, marking distances to renowned destinations, before we continue our adventure to the dramatic Girnigeo Castle.

Afternoon

Girnigeo Castle, Wick for lunch and journey south

Perched on windswept cliffs on the Caithness coast, Girnigeo Castle is our next stop. This ancient ruin, with its dramatic views of the North Sea, holds wild tales of the past. Walk along the wild coast to the eerie ruins and listen to the chilling tales connected to this place. The fresh sea air must have stimulated your appetite, so we head to Wick for lunch. Once a key Viking settlement, this small town's strategic location shaped its storied past of trade and raids. Traveling south, enjoy the green valleys and coastal views en route to Dunrobin Castle, where you can snap a photo of this stately home. The journey continues through lands once home to Picts and Vikings.

Early Evening

Dornoch and return journey to Inverness

We have a short break in Dornoch, a town blessed with a peaceful atmosphere and scenic surroundings before we resume our return journey to Inverness. And as we head back to ‘the Capital of the Highlands' you can reflect on the towering mountains, winding coastal roads, and hidden gems that defined your journey along the North Coast 500.

FAQ

Hello curious traveller, are you ready to go beyond with us? Whether you're heading to the Highlands, the Lake District, or further; we know you might have a few questions before setting off on your adventure. Our FAQs are here to help make your journey smooth and stress-free.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

Do I need a visa or travel authorisation to go on a Rabbie’s tour?

Entry requirements vary depending on your nationality, personal circumstances, and the country or countries you will travel to and transit through. It is your responsibility to ensure you have all relevant documentation required for your selected itinerary and that you meet all formal entry requirements before travelling.

You can find up-to-date and reliable information on the official tourism website of the counties you’re visiting, or from their embassy or consulate.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

Cancellation terms depend on which tour you've booked:

1 Day Tours
You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure.

2 - 9 Day Tours
You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure.

10+ Day Tours
You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure.

Package tours
You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 56 days or more before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking please email tours@rabbies.com as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

What is a guaranteed departure?

It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

We like to keep our coaches small and nimble. This means we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you frequently stop in local towns and villages for comfort breaks.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours. Also, some of our tours that focus on whisky experiences are suitable for travellers aged 18+.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy every country you visit with us. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

How does accommodation work?

Accommodation is a key part of your multi-day tour experience. Where accommodation is not included as part of your tour you will have the free option to have us reserve rooms on your behalf (Reserved by Rabbie's) or server your own accommodation with a venue of your choosing (Tour Only).

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.
