Arnol Blackhouse
Journey to Ullapool, Highlands
You rise early to embark on a stunning journey through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, renowned for its dramatic and unspoiled landscapes. After leaving Inverness, the winding road takes us across vast, open moorlands dotted with heather and gorse, offering sweeping vistas of rolling hills and distant, rugged mountains. Lochs glisten in the valleys as you travel to Ullapool, a charming fishing village on the famous North Coast 500 route. Here, you'll board the ferry for the next stage of your adventure.
Ferry to Stornoway, and arriving on the Isle of Lewis
The ferry departs from Ullapool, carrying us on a journey across the Minch to Stornoway, the main town of the Outer Hebrides. As we pass the Summer Isles, keep an eye on the water—the Minch is steeped in legend, said to be the home of the elusive Hebridean Sea Serpent. Even if the mythical creature remains hidden, you may still spot dolphins or whales accompanying your two-and-a-half-hour voyage. The anticipation builds as the Isle of Lewis comes into view, signaling the start of your Hebridean adventure. Over the next two days, you'll immerse yourself in the rugged landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unhurried pace of life that the Outer Hebrides are famous for.
Exploring the Isle of Lewis
We arrive in Stornoway, ready to explore this remote and unique island. We start at the Arnol Blackhouse, a restored 19th-century croft house that offers a glimpse into traditional farming life.
The Blackhouse is undergoing maintenance until 26th May 2025 and you’ll be only able to see it from the outside.
From there, we travel to Port of Ness, a sandy beach with crystal-clear waters and rolling dunes that invite you for a leisurely walk. The day concludes at the Butt of Lewis, the northernmost point of the island. Here, centuries of crashing waves have shaped rugged cliffs that offer breathtaking views of the open sea.
Free evening in Stornoway
After experiencing the dramatic cliffs and the raw power of the Atlantic Ocean, we journey back through the Isle of Lewis to your overnight accommodation in Stornoway. The evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure. Will you sample the renowned local black pudding or take a relaxing stroll along the picturesque harbor? The choice is entirely yours.

Today, the scenery becomes even more striking as we head to the Isle of Harris. The first thing that captures your attention is the towering mountains, rising dramatically from the landscape. As you wind through these natural marvels, your driver-guide will share the traditions and stories that bring this region to life. The morning includes time to explore the island, with a short break in Tarbert, a charming village nestled between the Isle of Lewis and Harris.
Luskentyre Beach and exploring Isle of Harris
Next, we venture deeper into the wild beauty of Harris, stopping at Luskentyre Beach, frequently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Its powdery white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters are surrounded by rugged, unspoiled landscapes. Take a peaceful walk and soak in the natural beauty, marveling at the way the ever-changing light enhances the vibrant hues of the sea. It's a perfect spot to experience the untamed beauty of the Outer Hebrides.
Exploring the Isle of Harris
We stop for lunch in one of the villages, where you can enjoy local seafood and specialties. After the break, we continue exploring Harris, visiting stunning landmarks like St Clement's Church, a 16th-century sanctuary set against a dramatic backdrop. Inside, intricate carvings and ancient tombs tell stories of devotion and the island's enduring connection to its people. Back in Tarbert, we visit the Harris Gin Distillery to sample their award-winning gin, crafted with local botanicals. We then stop at the Clo Mòr Harris Tweed Centre, where you can learn about the heritage of this iconic handwoven fabric and browse their shop for unique pieces of Hebridean craftsmanship.
Free evening in Stornoway
As we journey through the peat-rich moorlands and shimmering lochans back to Stornoway, keep an eye out for the legendary Hag of the Moors, a spirit of fierce weather believed to summon storms and test the endurance of travelers. Once back in Stornoway, spend the evening strolling along the scenic waterfront as the sun sets over the harbor. You can sample whisky in local bars or enjoy traditional Scottish and Gaelic music played by local musicians in one of the pubs.

Dun Carloway Broch
Stornoway to Dun Carloway Broch, Isle of Lewis
We begin the day by traveling to Dun Carloway Broch, stepping back in time to explore this ancient site.
Dun Carloway Broch, Isle of Lewis
Perched on a hillside overlooking the Isle of Lewis, this Iron Age broch has stood for nearly 2,000 years, a testament to the skill and resilience of its builders. As you walk through its stone passageways and gaze across the sweeping landscape, you can almost hear the echoes of past inhabitants who sought shelter and community within its walls.
Ardroil Beach and ferry back to Ullapool
Next, we visit Ardroil Beach, a stunning expanse of golden sands framed by rolling dunes and dramatic headlands. The beach is not only visually striking but also historically significant—it was here, in 1831, that the famous Lewis Chessmen, a set of medieval chess pieces, were discovered. Take a walk along the beach and keep an eye out for seals basking on nearby rocks. After two unforgettable days exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Lewis and Harris, we travel back to Stornoway to board the ferry. Bid farewell to these enchanting islands as we set sail across the scenic waters of the Minch to Ullapool.
Journey through the Highlands to Inverness
Once back on the mainland in Ullapool, we journey through the rugged beauty of the Northwest Highlands, passing the shimmering waters of Loch Broom and craggy hills on our way to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.
We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.
Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.
