You travel north over the Forth Road Bridge to the charming highland village of Dunkeld on the banks of the river Tay. From here you head into the Cairngorm national park and the ancient pine forests of the Rothiemurchus estate. Lunchtime will be spent on the beautiful shores of Loch Insh before a short forest walk takes you to the ruins of Loch an Eilein castle. Panoramic views of Loch Ness follow as you travel down to the banks of the famous loch and the village of Dores where you can do some “Nessie” spotting! Then it’s on to the shores of Loch Broom where you spend two nights at Ullapool. (*on some tours it may be necessary to stay in Inverness in which case the itinerary will be subject to slight changes)
you visit the far northwest highlands and the expanse and wildness of the mountains of Assynt with its abundance of wildlife. This area is historically famous as being the first crofting area to be bought by the local crofters, the Assynt Crofters’ Trust. You will be immersed in the history of the area and visit the 15th century ruins of Ardvreck Castle, once the stronghold of the MacLeods of Assynt. The day is full of amazing views of some of Europe’s oldest landscapes from the stunning white sand beach at Achmelvich Bay to the traditional fishing village of Lochinver. With the chance of seeing wildlife such as whales and red deer as well, this is sure to be a memorable day.
You leave Ullapool and head south to take in the drama of the River Droma as it plunges 60m down into the Corrieshalloch Gorge. From here you travel past the mountains of the Beinn Eighe national nature reserve and along the picturesque coastline of Loch Torridon. The tranquil setting of Applecross is your destination for lunch before taking one of the highest roads in Scotland, Bealach na B (meaning the Cattle Pass), with its jaw-dropping views, hairpin bends and precipitous cliffs. In the afternoon you stop in “tropical” Plockton where you can see palm trees growing alongside Loch Carron and take time to enjoy its sheltered serenity. Then it’s over the sea to Skye and the delightful harbour town of Portree with its friendly welcome.
Today is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and your driver-guide's knowledge will come to the fore in developing the best day out for you. For example you might travel north to the stunning Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk through some of Skye's extraordinary geological scenery or visit the Kilt Rock, composed of basalt columns (reminiscent of the pleats in a kilt) with its waterfall cascading over the cliffs and down into the sea below. After lunch you can travel to Neist Point for a walk out to the lighthouse at the most westerly point on Skye. Alternatively a visit to Dunvegan Castle, ancient ancestral seat of the Clan McLeod, may be possible. Talisker Distillery is also on Skye, as are the famous Cuillin Hills. We return you to your accommodation in Portree in the late afternoon for you to enjoy a free evening in the village.
You travel south from Skye stopping first at the famous stronghold Eilean Donan Castle, used in the film “Highlander”, set at the head of three lochs as protection against Viking raiders. Continuing east through the rugged mountains of Kintail including the splendour of the Five Sisters, you drive down through Glen Garry past Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, then onto Fort William for lunch. In the afternoon you will explore spectacular Glencoe, scene of the infamous massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692, before stopping in Killin for refreshments beside the Falls of Dochart, and arriving into Edinburgh.
Enjoyed cramming a lot in to these five full days of traveling through the northwest part of Scotland. Unfortunately the weather wasnt the best on this trip, we got rain every day, but it did not stop us from enjoying the adventure and seeing some amazing scenery. On this tour, you get a taste of the highlands, the lochs, the fishing villages, some castles, and the lovely Isle of Skye followed by the very interesting Eilean Donan castle tour. Wish we could have seen more on the Isle of Skye, it has so much to offer, but can only squeeze in so much in one day. May have to return for more some day! Edinburgh is a beautiful city to start and end from too, just amazing medieval history!
Thank you to our amazing tour guide and driver Donald who showed our group all around the Highlands. Being in the small van meant we could access narrow roads and get off the beaten track. We saw so many incredible sights and always have enough time to explore and take photos. Donald always shared interesting and funny stories, accompanied by Scottish music. I would definitely recommend the Highland Explorer, we saw places we would have never been able to find ourselves. Thank you Rabbies and Donald!
We want to Thank Donald for a fantastic tour. It was a wonderful trip and he is a great travel director ! His love for his country and passion for people made our travel fun and absolutely fabulous. Donald is a Great Asset to Rabbies and we will recommend Rabbies to our friends and family. Thank You. Robert and Charmaine Benfield South Africa
We took this tour in April 2017 with Nicky and we enjoyed both our guide and our fellow travelers. The scenery was beautiful and with the small bus we were able to go to places others could not. Good choice of bbs and lunch stops. Overall a great tour that only made me wish for more. One place we didnt go that was advertised and the reason we took this tour over others was Plockton, I expressed my desire to go there but was told we are not going to go! If you advertise a specific town, then it should be included in the tour.
My husband and I recently went on the Skye and Far North Tour. This tour was outstanding. The tour bus is very comfortable, the tour was planned to perfection and we loved our bus driver Donald. He was very informative about everything we were seeing and did it all with a great sense of humor to keep us entertained. The Isle of Skye is not to be believed its so beautiful. We are back home in California and still sharing Donalds songs and stories from our trip. Added bonus, we met some great new friends from various countries. I highly recommend this tour.
What an amazing tour! Ok, so yes, we had the best tour guide to ourselves for 5 days (sorry to all the other tours last week), and yes, Scotlands weather decided to make it sunny - SUNNY and WARM - for at least half that time AND we had the best fellow travellers sharing and making friends. So these things kind of biased my opinion, but, for the first (of many?) Rabbies Tours I have been on, this was fantastic. Bucket List, schmucket list - gotta think of more things to put on it now Ive checked so many off. Bealach Na Ba, Quiraing, meeting Highland Coos, a stag....on a crag(!!), check, check and check! Not to mention the promised waterfalls, beaches, castles, harbour views and fishing boats. Highlight? a picnic, with everyone just chillin, in the sun, on a cliff, with panoramic views. Thank you to Gill B, our fabulous guide - with the knowledge and fun but importantly, the approachability to make a first time solo traveller feel welcome and comfortable. Thank you to my fellow travellers for my being able to share my experience with you. Gotta do this again xxxxxx
I must say this experience of discovering the West Highlands and the Isle of Skye in 4 days has been amazing. Not only did we discover stunning places but also we had a fantastic guide. Pete was friendly, kind and helpful at every moment and helped us to taste a sip of the real life in the Highlands. We all had a fantastic time and had the chance tp mingle with the locals, which was fantastic. Thanks, Rabbies for this unforgettable experience and special thanks to Pete for discovering us the wonders of the Highlands and its people. Looking forward to being back in Scotland to have some new experience with Rabbies. 100 recommended.
Enjoyed five wonderful days and five types of weather, off and on the beaten track with Michael who went that extra mile every day to take us to locations that surprised and delighted us.
I became a Scotland lover after my trip. I enjoyed every minute of 5 days 305 spent. I loved the mystic lochs, waterfalls and magnificent mountains. Scotland is a very beautiful country. And as 305 see every scotch is addicted to nature. But it is definitely our tour guide Doug made my trip meaningful and enjoyable. I liked Dougs music very much. I continued to listen after 305 return to Turkey. Every minute was wisely planned with stories and music. Doug is a wonderful storyteller. You can blindly trust him. If 305 have a chance to take a trip again,305 would definitely travel with Doug. Nazl305

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.
We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.
Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.
If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies.
We have a cancellation period of three days for our one day tours, and 21 days for longer tours. If cancelled outside this period, we'll give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this period, refunds are at our discretion. Click here to view full terms and conditions.
It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.
Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.
Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.
We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.
We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.
You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.
We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.
We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.
You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.
Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.
We advise you take out travel insurance.
You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.
