Departing from Glasgow you quickly climb into the Renfrewshire Hills where the first stop of the day will give you a glimpse into the future at Europe’s largest wind farm – big enough to supply clean energy to over 180,000 homes. From here the road south into Ayrshire is quick and easy passing through rich farming country with many small towns and villages.
On arrival at Culzean Country Park you will have the choice of visiting the castle and gardens or just the gardens and woodland walks. An entry fee is payable on arrival. (Please note there is no free option at this stop). The castle dates from the late 18th Century – a peaceful time in Scottish history so it is less a defensive castle and more like a great country house with fine furniture and beautiful Robert Adam architecture. Sitting right on the edge of the cliffs looking out over the Firth of Clyde the views are superb and the surrounding gardens are beautiful. For those who like walking there are miles of tracks and footpaths through the grounds – taking in the Swan Pond, deer park, and walled gardens as well as rocky coves and sandy beaches. This will also be your lunch stop.
After lunch you will follow the coastline to the tiny fishing village of Dunure with its ancient ruined castle and dark history. Continuing on, the road leads down into the village of Alloway. This is the countryside of Robert Burn’s – Scotland national poet - and you will see many places mentioned in his poems and songs –from Auld Kirk Alloway to the “Banks and Braes o’ Bonnie Doon”. The recently redeveloped visitor centre will tell you all you need to know about this remarkable man – born a poor farmer’s son but now famous as the writer of “Auld Lang Syne” – a song known and sung in friendship throughout the world. There are also riverside walks and the Auld Brig (old bridge) to explore as well as the haunted ruins of the old church. From here we return to Glasgow.
Our guide, Graham, had lots of information everywhere we went and could easily recite parts of Rabbie Burns tales, songs, and poems. Despite the foggy weather we had a wonderful time and lots of time to enjoy each stop.
My family and I had a great day doing this tour around the southwest coast of Scotland. The views from Culzean Castle are absolutely magnificent! Nice trip and nice guide. I would opt again for rabbies!
We had an amazing guide, Ian, that took us on this tour. It was only our fourth day in Scotland and we learned so much in a short amount of time due to his wealth of knowledge. We got to see some beautiful castles on the coastline and walk in the gardens in Burns Country. This trip to Scotland overall is for our honeymoon after 4 years of marriage. We would recommend this tour to any couple in love...it was very romantic. Ian - thank you for sharing your passion for Scotland with us!! We greatly appreciated all of your lovely stories and history :-) Sincerely, Jennifer Douglas Christy (Groton, CT, USA)
The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.
We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.
Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.
If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies.
We have a cancellation period of 48 hours for our one day tours, 15 days for two to nine day tours, and 21 days for 10+ day tours. If cancelled outside this period, we'll give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this period, refunds are at our discretion. Click here to view full terms and conditions.
It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.
Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.
Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.
We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.
We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.
You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.
We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.
We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.
You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.
Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.
We advise you take out travel insurance.
You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.
