Route (English)

Day 1

Depart Edinburgh and travel north into the Highlands. First stop will be the historic village of Dunkeld where you will take a short walk through the forest to some waterfalls. Continuing north the route passes through the Grampian Mountains to the Spey Valley where you will stop for lunch. In the afternoon you will visit the world famous Loch Ness. There will be time for a visit to the impressive waterfalls at Corrieshalloch Gorge before you arrive in the West Coast fishing port of Ullapool for your overnight stay.

Day 2

Catch the morning ferry from Ullapool for the two hour sail along Loch Broom, past the Summer Isles then out across the Minch to Stornoway – the main town on Lewis and capital of the Outer Hebrides. Look out for dolphins, whales and seabirds during the crossing. In the afternoon explore the North West coast from Arnol with its historic old “blackhouse”, through traditional crofting townships to Port of Ness and the very north tip of the island – the Butt of Lewis. From the lighthouse here there is nothing between you and the Americas! Overnight in Stornoway.

Day 3

Today will be spent exploring some of the prehistoric remains on the island as well as its finest beaches. The fascinating circular stone fort, or Broch, at Carloway will be your first stop followed by more traditional crofting communities such as Gearrannan and Shawbost. Then it’s on to Callanish with its mysterious ancient stone circle. In the afternoon you will head for the remote district of Uig with its fine, sandy beaches at Bhaltos, dramatic sea cliffs and rugged hills. This is the wilderness of the Western Isles at its finest. Overnight again in Stornoway.

Day 4

Travelling south today from the wild moorlands of Lewis to the more mountainous Harris – almost but not quite an island on its own. Famous for the locally produced cloth, Harris Tweed, it is also home to the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and the stunning white sands of Luskentyre. After a morning of exploring South Harris you will stop for lunch in the small port of Tarbet. Here you will catch the late afternoon ferry to Skye and continue on to the harbour town of Portree, your base for the next two nights.

Day 5

Today is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and your driver/guide's knowledge will help develop the best day out for you. For example you might travel north to the stunning Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk through some of Skye's extraordinary geological scenery or visit the Kilt Rock, composed of basalt columns (reminiscent of the pleats in a kilt) with its waterfall cascading over the cliffs and down into the sea below. Or, after lunch you could travel to Neist Point for a walk out to the lighthouse at the most westerly point on Skye. Alternatively a visit to Dunvegan Castle, ancient ancestral seat of the Clan McLeod, may be possible.

Day 6

Departing from Portree the return journey to Edinburgh has many highlights – a visit to Eilean Donan Castle, Fort William and the dramatic scenery and dark history of Glencoe. Travelling back south through the Central Highland the last stop of the day will be in Killin beside the Falls of Dochart before returning to Edinburgh.

Outer Hebrides

The tour to the Outer Hebrides Skye with Mahri was amazing fun, jaw dropping scenery and so many laughs.

Scotland Memories

Mary Jane Quinn Posted on 21/08/2018

We just completed the six day tour of Skye and the Outer Hebrides with Keith Fraser. Keith kept sixteen of us entertained with his knowledge, his love of whisky and music. We were able to visit lots of out of the way sites unreachable by a larger bus tour in order to make this a more meorable experience for us. Our only concern was the lack of places to eat in Stornoway, Ullapool, and Portree unless you had a reservation. When we arrived at our B and B at 6:00 or after in the evening, it was difficult to find somewhere to eat as we didnt have those necessary reservations and our group had to resort to shopping at the local grocery store for a Scottish picnic in our rooms. Perhaps reservations could be made in future by the tour drivers in advance to prevent this from happening. We were very happy with our accommodations and our hosts did all they could to make us feel at home. We look forward to taking another Rabbies tour in the future.

Hebridean adventure

Ninsig Posted on 01/07/2018

What a wonderful tour this was! I have been to the outer Hebrides before but there are always new things to experience and new places to visit. Our guide Keith Fraser was outstanding. I had been on tour with him before so I knew I was in good hands. His friendliness was exceptional. He did his utmost to give us a memorable tour. Weather varied a bit but that is Scotland in a nutshell. Most of the time the weather was quite good, but when we visited the Butt of Lewis there was a proper downpour. On the second day on Lewis Keith took us to see a few places I have not been to before but my favourite stop this day was undoubtedly Bosta Beach on Great Bernera. I suggested this stop and I was very happy when it turned out to be a good place to visit. In the evening he took those of us who wanted it back to Callanish to experience the celebration of the summer solstice. Very enjoyable! The following day we headed south to Harris and the beautiful Luskentyre beach. This is one of my favourite places in Scotland and I was thrilled to be back again. This year I even went for a paddle because the weather was so nice. Water was chilly but I loved the experience. After touring Harris we headed for Skye by ferry. I like Skye but I must admit I prefer Lewis and Harris. The outer Hebrides have just a very special charm. When we headed back to Edinburgh the weather got better the further south we got, and for the first time I got to see Glencoe in sunshine. Keith just seemed to tick off boxes left, right and center – new places to see, Luskentyre in sunshine, Glencoe in sunshine, the Kelpies etc. He was simply brilliant. So once again thank you for an absolutely awesome tour!

Travelling with Rabbies.

Brian ORourke Posted on 19/06/2018

Last year I booked two of the five day tours with Rabbies - The Orkneys and the Mull, Iona, Staffa and Skye. Both were terrific, great mixture of scenery, history, folklore and introductions to the local way of life. Last week I went on the 6 Day Outer Hebrides Tour - if anything, it was even better! Everything you advertised was covered despite some inclement weather (Storm Hector!), fantastic scenery, neolithic sites, wonderful beaches and stories of the Croft Wars which are of a particular interest of mine. The Blackhouses of Lewis were very interesting, a way of life that has all but disappeared. The history aspect of Rabbies Tours have always been a bonus point for me - love it! The company on the bus were terrific, very warm and friendly, all nationalities. Special thanks must go to our driver/guide Chris - nothing was any trouble to him, historical aspect to his stories was first class, also enjoyed the folklore tales although Im not sure I believed them all!

Incredible tour through the most wonderful country

Gabi1968 Posted on 01/06/2018

It was our 5th Rabbies tour, so we have some experience to share, and the Outer Hebrides tour with our guide Alan was the best of them all! He is a warmhearted person and the most fabulous storyteller one could imagine and took us on a time journey to feel in the midst of all the kings, wars, and how the life was during those centuries. Everything was topped with the most beautiful and wild scenery on the Isle of Lewis and Harris as well as many historical important spots like the blackhouses or the atmospheric Callanish Standing stones. After that we visited Skye, and it was a huge contrast to the wild and lonely Lewis and Harris. The itinerary of the whole tour couldnt be better than it already is. We loved Scotland before, but now it owns a big part of our hearts. Thank you so much, Alan and Rabbies! We had the best UK vacation ever with you!

Get Ready to Fall in Love!

We left on this tour June 20th and for the next 6 days you could not have done better than being in the hands of our driver/guide Matt K. He was a wonderful guide and he opened our eyes to the beauty, the history, and the myths of this wonderful country. From day 1 we knew that we had picked the right tour company with Rabbies, the bus size alone made the tour so pleasant. We had 13 other fellow travellers and by the end of the first day we felt like we were amongst old friends. The whole group Matt just clicked, it was a great feeling. The BBs that we stayed at were very clean and homey with friendly hosts great breakfasts. The scenery and the stops we made were all fantastic. There was just the right amount of talking, music, stops and things to do along the way to keep everyone wide awake and entertained. Matt asked if we had any special reasons for taking the tour and I mentioned that my Moms family were MacLeods, originally from Skye, and low and behold on Skye Matt took us to Dunvegan Castle and I was able to sign the MacLeod registry - a very special moment for me! To anyone considering a tour with Rabbies I would say dont hesitate for a moment, you wont be disappointed.

Wonderful 6 day tour!

We had an amazing journey! Was the best tour I have ever taken. Our guide Karen was the BEST! So much knowledge and funny too. She made our trip very comfortable and FUN. Scotland has the most beautiful sights. Loved the beaches, looked like the belonged in the Bahamas. All of it was my favorite! We had 13 people on the van and we made friends with them all. We exchanges emails to keep in touch. I think I have made some lifelong friends thanks to Rabbies !

Outstanding 6 days!

Anna Maruzhenkova Posted on 19/06/2017

I went on this tour on 4th of June and really want to thank Rabbies for the best vacation Ive ever had in my life! Ive been on several tours with them and they all went great so I kept coming back. But this one is so far the best. If you cant decide whether you should go on your own or book with them let me tell that its worth it and why it is so. Not only it was my dream come true seeing Isle of Skye and Outer Hebrides but also it was a blast to share this experience with a bunch of wonderful, charming, funny and truly amazing people. We truly became an international 6 days family. Everyday we laughed, explored, supported each other and done so many marvelous things I never thought I would. There were swimming in the ocean, seeing dolphins, taking the boat trip on Skye, having lunch in the mountains, listening to inspiring stories, having drinks while chatting non stop. So many things you can gain with this tour! Im Russian and was very nervous that my accent or wrong pronunciation will get in the way of connecting with people but they were very kind and understanding and my worries soon disappeared. Our guide Doug made sure everyone was happy and entertained. He always tried to do the best for us, trying to show us things we couldnt possibly find and see on our own. Even when we werent sure how some of the things will work out, would they be interesting or beautiful, Doug knew what he was doing and they always were great. He was able to read the group very well and connect with everyone. His great storytelling ability mixed with his songs collection was essential part of the tour and just made it all even better. If youll be lucky you will even see your guide in a kilt:) Honestly I think youll never know Scotland on your own in such a short period of time from so many angles such as history, politics, sports, traditions, real life stories and many more if you travel on your own. Rabbies really put its heart and soul into this making it a magical experience. One I would never forget. It was the trip of a lifetime. If you are still not convinced I would add that Rabbies will take care of your accommodation, book lovely and stunning places for you. Their buses are very comfortable and you wont have to drive around frantically trying to find your way in the islands misty mountains if youre on your own. You can just relax and consume entertaining and glorious stories about Scotland from your guide. I will certainly book another tour next year with them (still deciding which one I should choose). Scotland is so magnificently beautiful that you want to go back again and again. And now its so hard to be somewhere else and not in the mountains, like some piece of me is missing. Thank you, Rabbies for the joy and magic.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies.

What are your cancellation policies?

We have a cancellation period of three days for our one day tours, and 21 days for longer tours. If cancelled outside this period, we'll give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this period, refunds are at our discretion. Click here to view full terms and conditions.

What is a guaranteed departure?

It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.
