Mac was an amazing driver and tour guide. The weather in Skye was perfect and we enjoyed Portree. Mac should be commended for his knowledge and love of his Scottish heritage. At every stop he picked up litter left by other groups. Mac made this an amazing tour. We look forward to other Rabbie's tours.

We (2 couples) took a 3-day tour to Isle of Skye with our guide and driver Barney. The whole experience was terrific. Barney, with his stories and history of Scotland, the music and the scenic stops provided a memorable and wonderful trip that we will always remember. This is the first "tour" we've ever taken when traveling anywhere in Europe and the trip exceded our expectations. Skye is a magnificant place and the out of the way places that Barney took us to we would never have found or knew to go to if we weren't on this tour. We loved the 3-day so much that when we found out Barney was conducting the 1-day tour to St. Andrews and the fishing villages of Fife, we booked that tour too. As the Scots say, it was brilliant! If we visit Ireland, England or Scotland again, Rabbies will be our first contact. We're from the US and I say without hesitation, DON'T CONSIDER DRIVING YOURSELF. I can't imagine driving those narrow and steep roadways ourselves, and felt completely safe with Barney at the helm.

My trip planner found this photography tour and suggested it. I was leary. First, I am not a fan of organized tours. I don't like being on a schedule with inflexibility on where we go and when. Second... I've done photography things in the past and they were geared to people with point and shoots... not people after the perfect, iconic image of their trip to blow up big, frame and hang over the couch to remember their time. But given the terrain of Scotland, a tour was probably best... so I signed up. First -- for a 4-day guided, small group tour... the price was phenomenal. L400 for 2 people. I was astonished. Well worth the price paid. I like feeling like I got my money's worth and then at the end feel like I would have paid more for it. Our driver, Ross Hutton, turned out to be a photographer himself, as well as just a splendidly nice guy... We quickly found that this tour was going to blow away any preconceived notion I had about "photography tours." Caveat to my comments: we were the only 2 on board with DSLRs. Ross made sure the key spots on the trip -- that the light was right and that we were in good positions for the best photos... often parking us or directing us up hills to avoid getting things like telephone poles and wires out of the shot. Any time a loch was smooth and had a good reflection, we came to a scretching halt to see if there was a good image to be had. I very much appreciated this level of detail. We stopped a lot. And if anybody on the tour wanted to stop to grab any photo (or go to the bathroom), Ross was amenable unless we were on a time crunch to catch a ferry. The only time I felt time pressured to get my bum moving was on the Quirang Mountains. We drove to the top and walked down. I thought I was doing good given multiple stops to try different angles and images... but it turns out half the group stayed at the top and rode down... The best shot in my opinion is a the bottom looking up, not the other way around. I never got it... But I did get my "Hairy Coo" photo! Ross promised and he delivered! Often, like in the town of Portree, recognizing that my sister and I really, truly were on a photo safari (unlike the others in the group), Ross would recommend after hours locations for us to explore to get great pix. While we were on the bus... Ross added in just the right amount of history... but my favorite parts were the subtle humor notes that he inserted too... "And here's one of Scotland's son's playing one of my favorite tunes, Johnny MacCash, Walk the Line..." I don't think the older Thai ladies on our tour picked up on his jokes. The other thing I really liked about touring with Rabbies was that it was small... There were only 16 of us on the bus and we all stayed in our own places allowing us a level of freedom and individuality to our tour. This was, I think, the first or second photography tour Rabbies' offered. 4-days long -- so not even on their marketing material. It is on their web site though... I really hope that Rabbies recognizes the great service they provided in offering a tour dedicated to photographers of all types. I loved every minute of it! Recommendations: -- 7pm is too early to stop... take longer lunches when the light stinks and stay out later toward sunset... or at least add in one sunset night. Plus, since most of the small towns roll up their sidewalks at 5pm, this will allow some semblance of shopping downtime mid day since you can't do that at night... -- Put a recommendation in the guide that a DSLR camera is recommended but not required... this will hint that this tour is intended for people who want to take pictures and therefore ensure that those who don't want to focus on that aspect are at least warned. I realize there is a balance that you don't want to drive people away... but if you're going to market something as a photography tour... people need to understand that is the reason. Some of the people on the tour just didn't understand why we stopped at certain places. I'm pretty sure they didn't realize they were on a photo tour. -- While Scotland is indeed a picturesque place... mountain after mountain after mountain got a little old on day 3. Need to mix it up with some different shots. We did stop and see a ruined abbey, a couple of castles, the Harry Potter train bridge, and got shots of the Hairy Coo... but for the most part, this was about landscape photography. Note that in the marketing material, but also add in some other things to shoot. -- Need to nail down the timing better... The boat ride was lovely, but other than seeing some seals, it seemed an awful long time when the result was only one decent photo opportunity. That was a bit touristy. Pleasant, but touristy. Overall, after weeks of traveling the whole of U.K., it was unanimous between the 2 of us that our 4 days with Ross on this Rabbies tour was the best activity we did, hands down...

Best tour from my 10 day stay in Ireland and Scotland. Had John, he was amazing and made the experience so much better!!
Posted by Loredana Russo on 04/06/2013

The landscape, people and guide went beyond my expectations. Our guide Barney Gordon ( future prime minister of Scotland) made the whole experience come alive. His presentation of Scottish history was in depth as well as entertaining. The tour route and accommodations were well planned and comfortable. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see breathtaking sights and learn about this magnificent country. Well done!

George, our guide, was a very likable personality and considerate person. He accommodated everyone's wishes and was most informative and lively. The scenery was spectacular.

We were a group of 7 from the States that had been in the UK for 3 weeks. Hands Down all 7 state the highlight of our trip was Duncan and the Isle of Skye. First off, Duncan has the most beautiful eyes but more to the point... a real passion for his country, its history and fables and the music. When we were not awing over the breathtakingly beautiful scenery of Skye, we were entertained by Duncan. We left with a love for Scotland! Thank-you.

Mav was really knowledgeable, and I really learnt a lot about Scotland's history, culture etc - which I would otherwise not have (at least not in the short span of time) if I did not go on this tour!

Hello, we are a group of four and plan to join your 3-day tour to the Isle of Skye. We are interested in the one departing on the 20th August, but from the calendar it shows 20th Aug is already unavailable for four passengers :( Is the availability fixed? Or do you have any wait list? Thanks in advance! -JP

Hi, I come from HK. My friend and I plan to join your three days trip to Isle of Skye. We look at your trip but the content is a bit brief. We love hiking and taking photos. Is the trip suitable to us? Do you mind to give us more detail of the trip? If the trip can fit our need, we hope to join it on 3 June 2013. Will the Isle of Skye 3 day trip be availiable on that day? Regards, Eva POON

Driver/guide is a pleasant personality , an actor , a mimic, a singer , (cinema ,history, cricket ,geography) all knowing to appreciable extent .He is unbiased and helping to every one.

I loved that it was a small tour of about 10 people- everyone got a chance to talk to one another, so it made for a really personable time b/c we all knew the driver as well as we know each other. Great way to meet people while travelling alone.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of taking the 3 day Skye tour with Mav as our guide. It was a really lovely trip, freakishly good weather for the time of year and always interesting thanks to Mav's information, anecdotes, wit and obvious passion for the history and environment of Scotland. I must add he was also an excellent driver and we felt like we were in safe hands on the whole trip. I am still amazed at just how much we saw, way beyond my expectations. I could honestly say it was some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever laid eyes upon and I cannot wait to get back to Scotland and see even more. My only regret is that the tour wasn't a month long!

We had perfect weather, and got to take advantage of really wonderful picture stops and some amazing hikes. Mav was really wonderful for always giving tidbits of information on anything and everything.

Too many great moments to mention, the whole experience was either fascinating for the history, breath-taking for the scenery or both!

George was the best guide, we all enjoyed his stories! Neist point was the best location.
Posted by Andy Sollfrank on 05/02/2013

The appropriate length of stops was perfect. Our driver often asked us how long we wanted at each location, which was nice for the less than ideal weather conditions.

Day 1 Depart Edinburgh at 09.00 and travel west passing Linlithgow Palace and Stirling with its imposing castle and views of the Wallace Monument. You pass Doune Castle, set of Monty Python's "Holy Grail" before stopping in Callander for refreshments. Crossing into the Highlands you head north towards the glorious scenery surrounding Loch Luibnaig then through Breadalbane (meaning the ‘high country of Scotland’) and up to the wild desolation of Rannoch Moor. You continue through the spectacular mountain pass of Glencoe, scene of the great massacre of the Clan Macdonald in 1692. Leaving Fort William after lunch you drive past Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, and into the Great Glen. Travelling west on the "Road to the Isles" you head through the splendour of the Five Sisters of Kintail, the mountains guarding the pass on the way to the Isle of Skye. You stop to visit the famous Eilean Donan Castle, one of Scotland’s most photographed castles, set at the junction of 3 lochs and completely surrounded by water. Crossing over the bridge to Skye, you follow the dramatic coastline north towards the island’s capital, Portree. You are then dropped off at your accommodation in the early evening where you are free to go out and explore the town.

Day 2
is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather and your driver/guide's knowledge will come to the fore in developing the best day out for you on that particular day. North of Portree is the Trotternish ridge with its spectacular cliffs and rock formations, such as the famous landmark – the Old Man of Storr, the impressive sea cliff, Kilt Rock and the stunning mountain pass of the Quiraing. Amazing natural scenery, which is best enjoyed away from the bus by taking a walk through this unique landscape. Further west the scenery changes again with the emerald green valley of Glendale, the dramatic sea-cliffs of Neist Point (the most westerly point on the island, where you might get lucky and spot some whales or sharks!), and the 13th-century home of the Clan Macleod, Dunvegan Castle. You return to Portree in the evening.

Day 3
You will be collected from your accommodation and travel south through the Cuillin Hills and back over to the mainland for stunning views over Loch Duich and the 5 Sisters of Kintail. Onto Loch Ness for lunch and the possibility of spotting "Nessie". There is a boat trip (Summer only) available here that will get you that bit closer! Heading south now through the Grampian mountains along Loch Laggan, famous now as "Monarch of the Glen Country" before passing Dalwhinnie, home to Scotland's highest whisky Distillery, and onwards past Blair Castle stopping for refreshments before heading back to Edinburgh past Perth and over the Forth Road Bridge. Arriving at 19.00 approx.
