La côte du Whisky et Islay – Circuit de 4 jours

Les départs ayant lieu le lundi offrent l’opportunité de voir plus d’exemples de fabrication de whisky car toutes les distilleries fonctionnent pendant la semaine. Nous recommandons les départs le lundi comme étant le meilleur choix pour les vrais enthousiastes et nous essayons d’organiser des dégustations supplémentaires si possible.

Pour les départs ayant lieu le lundi , les jours 1 et 4 seront inversés

Jour 1 Votre itinéraire traverse le Parc National de Loch Lomond et comprend des visites à Inveraray, Loch Fyne et au Royaume de Dalriada. Là vous pouvez visiter les Pierres Levées de Kilmartin et le musée communal avant de prendre le ferry pour Islay où vous passerez trois nuits à Bowmore.

Jour 2 Votre journée sera variée , faite d’un mélange de superbes paysages, de plages de sable blanc, de promenades et des whiskies d’Islay – célèbres pour leur production en bord de mer et pour leur fort goût de tourbe. La journée comprendra une promenade sur les jolies baies sablées  de la côte ouest d’Islay, la côte de Saligo, une visite à la distillerie de Kilchoman, un aperçu de la baie de Machair, un tour du minuscule village pêcheur de Portnahaven, une visite à la distillerie de Bruichladdich et au musée d’Islay.

Jour 3 Vous explorerez la côte sud d’Islay, où sont installées les distilleries de Laphroig et de Lagavulin, et cela sera suivi par une visite, une dégustation et un déjeuner de produits locaux à Ardbeg. Vous pourrez aussi choisir entre une visite aux ruines de l’église Kildalton, célèbre pour sa croix celte du 8ème siècle et du temps libre dans le village de Bowmore. Ou une balade sur la place d’Islay House, où sont installés des artisans et producteurs locaux, ainsi que dans les bois le long de la rivière Sorn.

Jour 4 Vous quitterez l’île pour revenir en ferry à Argyll et à l’ancien royaume de Dalriada. Vous déjeunerez à Kilmartin, haut-lieu de la préhistoire avec ses 350 monuments préhistoriques ainsi que ses cercles de pierres. Vous finirez par une visite libre à Oban avant de rentrer à Edimbourg en passant par Glasgow.

Comme nous pensons que des temps d’arrêt sont nécessaires au cours du circuit en autocar, nous vous suggérons d’en profiter pour faire des balades dans la campagne, et nous vous recommandons donc d’apporter des vêtements et des chaussures adaptés. L’Ecosse peut être un pays humide!

Full Itinerary (Friday departures)

Day 1 Leaving Edinburgh at 08.30 you will head west through Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow, along Loch Lomond then west through the mountains to the beautiful little village of Inveraray on the banks of Loch Fyne. Here you can perhaps sample some of the local seafood for lunch or just explore the historic town itself. After lunch you will then travel through Argyll and into the ancient Kingdom of Dalriada. There are more than 350 prehistoric monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin. You will stop here to see the mysterious stone circles and standing stones and visit the community museum. From here it is a short drive to Kennacraig where you catch the early evening ferry to Islay. The sail is just over 2 hours and you should look out for wildlife such as dolphins, whales and seabirds. On arrival on Islay it is a short drive to Bowmore for your 3-night stay.

Day 2 A full day exploring Islay. The itinerary today is quite flexible with a mixture of beautiful scenery, white sand beaches, short walks and of course the famous Islay whiskies - renowned for their strong peaty flavours and nurtured by the salty sea air. In the morning you will take the short drive to the west of the island via Saligo Bay for a visit to Kilchoman Distillery (the newest and smallest on the island) with the option of a coastal walk to Machair Bay for any non-whisky lovers. After lunch you will explore the tiny harbour village of Portnahaven (look out for seals) before taking the back roads along the west coast with its lovely sandy bays. Alternatively - for those who want to visit another distillery we will be able to drop you at Bruichladdich for a tasting and visit to the shop. In the afternoon you will have the chance to visit Bowmore distillery or just relax and explore the village. 

Day 3 Another day in paradise! Today you will explore the southern side of the island, home to the smokiest and peatiest of all whiskies – Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. You will visit Ardbeg for a tour, tasting and lunch. The restaurant here is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy local produce as well as some unique whisky. You then follow that up with a visit to Laphroaig or a visit to the ruins of Kildalton church with its famous 8th Century Celtic cross. Alternatively we may stop in Bridgend where you could visit the community craft producers at Islay House Square or take a walk through the woods along the nearby River Sorn.

Day 4 This morning you take the ferry back to the mainland then travel up the coast to Oban – a busy harbour town and the main ferry port for the islands. Here we will drop off anyone who is continuing on the Mull, Iona and Isle of Skye extension. The others will have some free time to explore the town, have a late lunch or even pop into Oban Distillery before departing for the return trip to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Return time approx. 20.00

Full Itinerary (Monday departures)

Day 1 Leaving Edinburgh at 08.30 you will head west to Stirling and into the Highlands with a short stop in the holiday town of Callander for refreshments. After travelling through the mountainous northern part of the Loch Lomond National Park you will arrive in the busy harbour town of Oban. You will have a couple of hours here with the chance to visit the Oban Distillery and sample some local seafood for lunch. You will then depart Oban mid-afternoon for the journey to Kennacraig to catch the evening ferry to Islay. The sail is just over 2 hours and you should look out for wildlife such as dolphins, whales and seabirds. On arrival on Islay it is a short drive to Bowmore for your 3 night stay

Day 4 This morning you take the ferry back to the mainland and travel the short distance to Kilmartin Glen where we will have lunch. There are more than 350 prehistoric monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin and you will have the chance to see the mysterious stone circles and standing stones and visit the community museum. From her the tour continues round the coast to the beautiful little village of Inveraray on the banks of Loch Fyne. The town is full of historic buildings with old ships in the harbour and a great whisky shop! Finally you will return via Loch Lomond to Edinburgh for approx. 19.30

* Monday departures offer the chance to see more whisky production as all the distilleries are in operation on weekdays. We recommend the Monday departures as the best choice for real enthusiasts and we try to fit in additional tastings where possible.
