Album: West Highlands & Lomond National Park by Luisa Ferrari
Depart Edinburgh 09.15am and travel northwest through the historic area of Linlithgowshire, close to the historic palace. The tragic Mary Queen of Scots was born at Linlithgow palace, and became Queen when she was only 6 days old. According to legend her father James V died of a broken heart when he discovered his wife had given birth to a daughter and not the son he was hoping for! Your route along the Forth Valley is one which has been used for thousands of years by invading armies, it was the northernmost frontier of the Roman empire and was later used by the English King Edward I as he marched proudly towards Stirling (only to be sent homewards to think again!). Nowadays it’s at the centre of one of Scotland’s most important industries with huge oil refineries dominating the area.
As you approach Stirling the magnificent castle dominates your view and you make your way up towards the high volcanic rock where it imposes itself upon the surrounding land. Known as the ‘Key to Scotland’, for centuries this was the most important castle in Scotland and the views from the top make it easy to see why.
To the north is the 220ft high tower of the National Wallace Monument commemorating Scotland’s great hero William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson in the Oscar-winning movie Braveheart. From the castle you can look down over the scene of Wallace’s greatest triumph, the battle of Stirling Bridge, where he defeated the English army in 1297. To the south is Bannockburn where, in 1314, the great Scottish warrior-king Robert the Bruce defeated the English army of Edward II. The battle was fought for possession of Stirling Castle but eventually led to a far greater prize for Scotland – the restoration of independence. It’s an area alive with history and you stop at the castle to give you time to soak up the history and heritage of this great site.
From Stirling you head into the Highlands and an area known as the Trossachs. Known as ‘The Highlands in Miniature’, it marks the point where the Lowlands meet the Highlands and entering this beautifully picturesque area feels like going into a different country. With its shimmering lochs, rugged mountain tops and forest-filled glens it’s easy to forget that this was once thought of as a dangerous frontier fought over by the fiercely territorial Highland clans. You stop here for lunch in the village of Aberfoyle, made popular in Victorian times due to its great location.
After lunch you ‘take the high road’ or back-road to Loch Lomond, Scotland’s largest lochs at over 22 miles long, passing Lochs Ard, Chon and Arklet along the way as you travel through the protected lands of Scotland’s first National Park. The route you take was described by the famous Scots comedian Billy Connolly as his favourite road in Scotland, and you can discover why – it’s stunning!!
You stop at Inversnaid on the secluded north-east of the loch, making it the perfect place to enjoy a walk along the ‘bonny banks’, up to a viewpoint for a fantastic view of the loch and the mountain it’s named after, Ben Lomond. This tranquil setting was once the home of Scotland’s famous highland folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor. Made popular by many books and films Rob Roy lived an incredible life as a soldier, businessman, cattle-rustler and outlaw. By spending time on the trails by the loch you will undoubtedly be walking in the footsteps of one of Scotland’s great legends. There is also an alternative option to enjoy a drink at the local hotel and sample the views. Leaving Loch Lomond you return to Edinburgh passing Scotland’s only lake – the Lake of Mentieth (although we have around 3000 freshwater lochs!). The legend states that after William Wallace was betrayed by his great friend the Earl of Mentieth and executed in London the name was changed from the Loch of Mentieth to the Lake of Mentieth so that nobody would ever forget the traitorous part the Earl played in his death.

Wonderful trip on Saturday greatly enhanced by Duncan's commentary and personal observations. With hindsight we'd have preferred more time at Stirling Castle but hey! There's always next time.

Our tour was very nice. We covered a variety of different types of Scottish terrain, and saw several very interesting sites. The highlights were Stirling Castle and Loch Lomond, both of which had amazing views and fascinating history. Our driver Roland did a great job of providing a historical narrative as we drove, and he gave the tour a personal character. I highly recommend this tour.

We had an amazing day out last Monday on the tour. Our guide Roland was superb, very funny and very knowledgeable. Stirling Castle was beautiful and the scenary was breathtaking - even if the walk up the 'hill' nearly took our breath away!!
This was our first trip to Scotland and WHEN we come back we would definately go on another tour. We had a fantastic time so thanks.

We loved our guide Robert. He really seemed to love history and made it come alive for us. Not just dry facts but stories about people's lives that made history. I could hardly keep up with all the information. I knew you were special.

Great day out even though the famous Scots weather didn't disappoint. John, our driver was informative and friendly. Recommended.

I greatly enjoyed my recent tour to Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle on 4/18. The driver, Gibby, was very friendly and provide great commentary during the tour. I especially appreciated the historical information he provided.

A friend and I did the Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle tour on Sunday and had a great time! Luckily the weather was nice which was great for strollling around Stirling Castle and having a nice walk around Lomond National Park. I particularly liked our tour guide Angela who was extremely friendly and very knowledgable about everything we saw on tour and on Scotland in general. I'd definitely recommend this tour to my friends..!

We did a tour with Helen as a guide and really appreciated. The guide was really commited into her job and happy to share about her culture and country. We learnt a lot about Scottish history and identity through breathtaking sceneries and typical music
We strongly recommend this tour with this guide...
Thanks for this day, even with "fresh" Scottish air.

I was very happy with this tour, Allie(?) the tour guide was very helpful and it made my experience very fun. It was interesting to hear and learn about the beauty of what Scotland has to offer. I would suggest this tour to anyone and everyone.

I was recently in Glasgow and was fortunate enough to experience a one day tour with Rabbie's, with David as our driver and tour guide. It was most pleasant and David was indeed most knowledgeable and pleasant with a good sense of humour. We enjoyed every bit of the day and would not hesitate to recommend your tours to anyone.

John, our tour driver/guide from Glasgow, takes all the credits in this pleasant tour. Although the weather was not on our side this time, the tour was very enjoyable. John is very friendly and kind enough to sneak us out of the route which gave us an opportunity to visit more places than we expected and dropped us off at the hotel at the end of the tour. The coach was very cozy, really recommend this tour!

Many thanks to you guys for providing an excellent service on my recent tour. John our guide very efficent and knowlegable and played great music throughout to suit the mood of the trip. There were only five of us, Noel from Belgium 3 lassies from Venezuala and of course myself from the emerald isle.
Will definatly return to use rabbies again in the near future and once again John Slainte!!!

Thank you to the tour guide whom i can not remember his name but you were great and really appreciate your company during the whole trip! If i have more time to spend in Edinburgh, i will definitely book for a few more day tours ! x

My newly husband and I (as we were on our honeymoon) traveled last week to the Loch Lomond & Stirling Castle Tour with Bob. He was great, very entertaining and engaged the group while on the drive. I would highly recommend the tour for a great one day trip and you cover a lot of land and the sights are breathtaking.

Hi, I am enclosing a picture of our tour guide, Helen, as she was cooling her feet. I hope that only one picture is sent. If you could, would you please get a copy of the picture to Helen, as she would like one and I do not know how elso to get it to her. Thank you. T.H. Harwood, M.D.

A small group of 7 people went off into the scottish mist, to learn about history and the craft of whisky-making, and of course, to adore the beautiful landscape. We became instantly friends, our lovely and friendly guide David kept us entertained but drove us safely the same time. We had a nice time and even the weather was better than told by the forecast.

Our group from Denmark had a wonderful tour. The weather was perfect (how did you guys arrange that???) Bob, our guide/driver was just great. He had lots of fun stories and anecdotes to relate (I promised not to reveal any of them here.) He even made a detour for us so we could see where Mary Queen of Scots was born and get pictures. I highly reccomend this tour to anyone looking for a day excursion from Edinburgh! Thanks Rabbies and Bob!

We recently took this tour and were very pleased. The countryside was beautiful and our vists to Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle magnificent. Our tour guide, Andrew, was amazing, polite, and friendly and kept us entertained with stories and historical facts. He was able to answer any question that was thrown at him. Andrew is an exceptional driver, especially along those one-lane, twisty roads to Loch Lomond. Rabbies should be proud of their tours and to have Andrew as one of their guides. Great job!

The three of us took the tour on Sept 20th. It was a beautiful day and made even more enjoyable by our guide TONY.
The history of Scotland was a bonus and his humor was enjoyable
Keep up th good work

We really enjoyed Angela's commentary & colorful history lesson. One suggestion would be to have everyone on the tour introduce themselves as an ice breaker, since she wanted audience participation, but people were quiet & reserved instead. All in all, though, we loved the tour & appreciated Angela's going above & beyond.

Thanks for this wonderful day (7.9.2009)! Now we`ll never look Braveheart with the same eyes again.
Helen told us to taste the Haggis: Yes we did it! And really, it`s better than it`s look like ....
Dear Helen, thanks for this great day.
The 4 girls and 1 boy from germany at the back seat. Greetings from Cologne.

Our tour guide made the entire day amazing. She is so proud of her heritage and shared great stories with us. She brought magic and awe to the tour. She played wonderful music and we even bought 3 cd's that she suggested. The music really adds a special touch to the scenery. She recommended a wonderful restaurant for those of us who had not tried haggis yet and we went directly to the restaurant after our tour. Great suggestion Helen! We even liked the haggis.
We will never forget the amazing tour that you took us on. What a perfect day.
Helen is a complete asset to the company. Just wanted you to know how lucky you are to have her. And we were fortunate to have her as our tour guide. Keep up the good work Helen.

thanks to our tour guide Frank who was a terrific guide who gave us time to walk around and look at the sights. He also gave us some really good anecdotes about Scotland and the local towns we visited. A great hike at Loch Lomond as well!!
Would highly recommend Rabbies to anyone and would certainly travel again with them.

This was a most enjoyable trip from start to finish. The driver John McDermott was excellent. He kept us well informed and was cheerful and very courteous. Despite the showery weather the visits to Stirling Castle, Loch Lomond and the Distillery were excellent. Will be returning to Glasgow again and we would definately go on another Rabbie's trip. Thanks for a great day out.

We had a wonderful tour. There were three generations of our family on board and we were all catered for. David kept us well informed and played us music to suit all generations. What impressed me most was his attention to every member especially at the whiskey tour. We had children and others that the whiskey didn't suit and he was so kind. Thanks again.

We were on Helens`tour of Loch Lomond & Stirling Castle ,had a fantastic day thanks to Helen and her incredible knowledge and story telling skills.
We had some difficulty at one point during the visit to Loch Lomond, and that`s were Helen became even more impressive.
Angie is disabled, having to use a wheelchair when out and about, and Helen proved to be a true star, she really did go out of her way to ensure that everything went smoothly for us,even to the point of waiting as we left the boat at Loch Lomond and struggling up a very steep hill ,me pushing from the right and she on the left,[then as we reached near the top of the slope a gentleman joined us,he too was a blessing].We realized on the boat there was no way we were going to manage on our own and then Helen just appeared and waiting to offer help.
It`s what the individual brings to the job that makes all the difference, and Helen brought with her the enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, kindness and warm personality that made all the difference for us that day.
Thanks Helen,yer wee star,so yae are !!

We JUST got back to the states from a week-long visit to the beautiful country of Scotland. I lined up three day-tours with Rabbie's and every single tour was spectacular! We were SO fortunate to have had Helen for two of our trips and Bob for our final ttrip to St. Andrews. They were both SO incredibly knowledgable and excellent tour guides! When we make it back to Edinburgh next year...I will absolutely line up more tours with this company - they were 100% professional and full of knowledge and Scotish history...I would adivse anyone interested in learning more and seeing all you can see in Scotland to go with Rabbie's and ask for Helen or Bob ...they were simply fantastic!!!!!

My granddaughter and I very much enjoyed our trip. Driver Bob made it a real pleasure. He chose a lot of small country roads and lanes, and that made the tour very interesting. His guiding was first class and his extra little diversions were greatly appreciated. Absolutely first class!

Had a great time at the tour around loch lomond, stirling castle and whisky distilery. David, the tour guide was humorous and entertaining. Unlike the usual guides which are quite boring, he enlightened us with the scottish history in a more interesting way. The small tour groups is a good idea to keep the time and tour plan in check. Way to go rabbies!

This was a fantastic tour. Helen was our guide, and she brought a youthful and energetic element to the trip. Her insight into Scotland's history as well as sharing her own personal experiences really separated this tour from another we took on our vacation (in a good way!).
The sites were all beautiful, and shouldn't be missed by those looking to see a bit of what Scotland has to offer.
I think about the only thing we weren't in love with was the amount of 'sing along' songs in proportion to other Scottish music that was played. I like the idea of giving us a taste of Scottish music, but maybe some more variety would help.
Next time we come back, we'll definitely take another tour with Rabbie's (most likely a multi-day tour).
Thanks so much!

We recommend to everybody to go and try out the Rabbie's tours, we are already thinking which one we want to go next
Thanks for a fab day Rabbie's!!!

The scenery was breathtaking. I would have liked a wee bit longer at Stirling Castle and I wish we had left off the final stop of the Loch Lomond Park and added the Willam Wallace Memorial instead.

We had a wonderful time on this tour. Much thanks to our Tour Guide Frank and our driver (in training) Colin. Frank and Colin were informative, clever and funny. They were very personable (kudos to your hiring department). We loved Stirling Castle and the countryside. My favorite part was traveling through Trossachs National Park. Frank had put on a CD with relaxing, beautiful music that added to the beauty of the scenery. We also had the pleasure of taking the Glencoe and West Highland Lochs tour with Frank and Colin and had a fantastic time. We felt safe at all times with Colin's expert driving. Scotland and its people are lovely.

Back home now and still can't stop looking at the photos. Overwhelmed by the beauty. I fulfilled a life long dream with you by visiting the highlands. Was there for the match which proved secondary despite the win. Helen McNabb was fab. Her driving, choice of music and historical facts were spot on.
Edinburgh itself was great too apart from the railway works but having said that no beggars, no litter ( very few bins mind you ) great food , lovely people and cheap.
Shame on me you are only 40 minutes away from Dublin. I will be back. I thought the west of Ireland was the nicest place in the world. But as the last song in Oliver goes. I think I better think it out again.
Thanks again

In closing ?

On May 20. 2009 we participated in a 1 day tour to Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle. We really enjoyed it. Our driver/guide, Helen McNabb, did a fine job. She was a good driver and could tell a lot about the places we saw. We will not hesitate to recommend Rabbie's if all the guides are like her. If we return to Scotland we surely will join another tour.
Sincerely Anna and Ole

I just write to say THANK YOU for a perfect day full of mind-blowing landscapes and great stories ( as usual ). Karen you are a perfect guide; funny, caring and entertaining and Pete you did a great job on your first day in this business, driving all day long and bringing us home alive. I am back in Germany for 2 day and I already miss Scotland!!!

We will definitely come back next time for a further tour :-) and recommend you to others.

It was really a very nice tour! I can recommend it. Our driver (Frank) is really passionated about Scotish history and he's a funny guy. The landscape was awesome, Stirling Caste we liked even more than Edinburgh Castle ;)
The whisky in Glengoyne was also nice ;D Our guide there was impressive. He was also very passionated about the process of makin Whisky. And he even made a tour for only the two of us. In our language! It was a perfect day! Thank you to Frank and the whisky-guide! :)

I just wanted to thank Rabbie's Trail Burner's for the 4 great tours that we booked with them. In particular, our guide Peter took us on two tours and was one of the best guides we've ever had on any of our trips around the world. I guess being American, we expect top service but rarely get it. We always assume 4 stars locally means 2 stars U.S.; but with Rabbie's and their guides, such as Peter, 4 stars really mean 4 stars. Thank you for making our stay in Scotland one of the best trips that we've ever taken. Sincerely, Thomas Pecorelli.

the tour guide was excellent. can't remember his name by now tho. His knowledge of Scottish history and personal stories were excellent. Very helpful as well as one of the tour participant left his bag at one of the tour site and the tour guide managed to retrieve it. He was also very environmentally friendly and can be seen picking up litter wherever we went. Excellent tour! will definitely recommend to others.

Full Tour Itinerary (English)
