Rabbie's News

Rabbie’s spend the day in the mire!

As we throw ourselves headlong into Summer, we still managed to squeeze in Rabbie's annual conference and awards ceremony on the 15th May 2007. Committed to our role in the enviroment, we decided to extend our green policy and spend the morning on a litter pick up at the Water of Leith, and celebrate our achievements in the afternoon at the presentation of two of our highly acclaimed awards.

With the whole of Rabbie's team working to keep Edinburgh's natural beauty in pristine condition Peter Lederer, Chairman of VisitScotland, was delighted to present the awards to us, which included a top Gold award from Green Tourism. This marked our continuous commitment to going the extra mile for Scotland's visitors, and to protecting the natural environment, which is crucial to maintaining Scotland as a top tourism destination.

In addition we also accepted our Hospitality Assured award ,based on the rigorous criteria of the European Foundation for Quality Management.

Here some of us are proudly displaying our recently acquired awards.

We would like to extend a big welcome to all our new, enthusiastic, bright and shiney drivers - MacKenzie, Nathan, Ally, Jacquie and Karen, who are all enjoying their first season with us, and also to Josie who has now joined our sales team for the summer. ( One or two of them are hiding in the background of this photo- a little camera shy yet....but oh how that will change! )

Robin Worsnop, our managing director, and founder of Rabbie's, was also delighted to be able to present a cheque to the National Trust for Scotland for £1,140 in respect of the £1.00 a head per passenger pledged by Rabbie's for everyone who joined our Highland Lochs and Glens tour. The money will go towards the ' save a footpath' appeal. Smaoin an latha- Thought for the day!

Thig tri nithean gun iarraidh, an t-eagal, an t-eudach is an gaol! (Three things come without seeking, fear, jealousy and love! )

Gaelic corner- Firinn an latha-Fact of the day. Our natural world - Nettles - Na feanntagan

Tha aodaich na feanntagan nas laidir na cotan agus nas min na hemp.
The cloth that comes from nettles is stronger than cotton and is much finer than hemp.

Tha iad math fuachdan is trioblaidean eile a thaobh sgamhan mar asthma is cuideachd hay fever.
Nettle tea is good for colds and other lung problems such as asthma and hayfever

Tha e math airson na dubhagan a ghlanadh. Glanaidh e a mach na toxins asad.
Nettles are very good at cleaniong your kidneys, and are very effective in cleaning toxins from your body.

Tha fenntagan cuideachd math airson altas is siataig a reir ar sinnsirean, bhiodh iad a'cuir fenntagan direach air a'chraiceann airson a'losgadh agus as deidh laimh cha robh an cradh ann.
Nettles used by our ancestors for the relief of arthritic and rheumatic pain by placing nettles onthe affected area, which after the stinging of the nettles has gone eases rheumatism..

Short Story

On May 15th- following news that Hollywood would be releasing a new fantasy film- The Water horse- The legend of the deep, about a boy who discovers a mysterious egg that hatches into a sea creature of Scottish ilk, Rabbie's team decided to head of in pursuit of other unknown and mysterious objects to be found lurking in the murky depths of the Water of Leith!

On reaching our designated 'clean up' area we were then issued with waders and other rubberised clothing. This was not apparantly, wholly unpopular with some members of staff! No special effects required! We then headed headlong into the burn!

The Water of Leith is the main river running through Edinburgh, and was at one time known locally as " the willing drudge". It became the busiest river in Scotland in the 18c for its valient efforts in turning up to 70 mill wheels along its 35 kms length, thus establishing many local villages such Balerno, Currie, Colinton, Dean vilage and Stockbridge to name a few. Today the mill wheels lie silent and dormant- the " willing drudge" provided this day by our team of Rabbettes!

By 1863 the river was the most polluted in Scotland due to its work load during this industrial period, but as the mills closed and a new sewerage system was established, the river has since successfully regenerated. In 2007 therefore, it is considerably cleaner, but to ensure it stays so, our brave soldiers plundered the river bed and collected an assortment of accumulated booty!

After several hours of backbreaking labour, our collective efforts had produced a treasure trove of bounty including a tool box, steering wheel, tyres, hair tongs and an iron board! Well atleast I can understand that one!

We concluded that at this rate we would almost have enough to make a new bus!

Picture and iron board, fitted with steering wheel and tyres, all hatched together with our newly gained tool box. Mmm yeh! Any rumours of Rabbie's being the first to establish another new concept in small group tours, offering an open top skateboard for the more adventurous traveller, are, I'm afraid, at this point unfounded! Although with the offer of a free hair do, courtesy of our hair tongs to tame those unkempt locks at the end of your trip, for the first 10 passengers to book, we expect there to be no shortage of interest!

Well everyone likes a bit of apres - skate! Don't they?!

Our treasure trove! Can you spot jaws! This is what we call quality river combing!

Says it all!- join in discussions with well known authors...

Scottish joke- you know it tickles!

A Glaswegian stops before a graveyard in a Gorbals cemetery, and notices a carved tombstone declaring,
"Here lies a lawyer and an honest man..."
"Ach, who'd ever think..." he murmered, "there'd be enough room fer two men in that one wee grave!..."

And Finally: yes it is the end...for another quarter at least!

Have the jacobite army cam hame?!! Any sign of Bommie Prince Charlie???

Wishing you all a happy summer from Suu and all at Rabbie's!
